Mountain lions prefer seclusion. They like to be alone and will stay the f away from humans unless there is a dire need to risk a confrontation. The trouble is, when there is nothing to kill where they normally hunt, they tend to branch out.

Things like habitat loss, overhunting, disease etc all contribute to lower populations of their preferred prey, so they are left with two choices: go hungry OR take matters into their own… paws. Sometimes this means rolling the dice and venturing into the danger zone to quell an ever-growing hunger.

It truly sucks that Oreo here had to bear the brunt of an issue far greater than either of these animals, but pets are truly under our protection only when they are inside our homes. Once they venture outside, they re-enter the natural food chain, and we must accept that whatever happens afterward is beyond our control.

This mountain lion is still on the loose, but local fish and game agents are still actively pursuing it
