A New York woman will go to prison after admitting to dumping her newborn son in a motel toilet shortly after giving birth to him last year, resulting in his hospitalization for two weeks.
 
The Times Herald-Record reported that Teresa Rose Smith, 23, was sentenced to 10 years for a November 1 incident at a Town of Newburgh motel room. After giving birth, Smith got dressed, charged her cellphone, and got a cab to pick up heroin.
 
Noting that Smith was experiencing withdrawal, lawyer Donalda Gillies said Smithâ€™s birth was fast and â€œalmost hard to understandâ€� in her drug-addicted state, according to the news outlet.

Judge David Herriford had been expected to deliver Lanez' sentence on Monday, but the proceedings turned into a marathon two-day session after the judge had attorneys for both sides argue each factor of his potential sentence and allowed seven witnesses, including Lanez's father and the mother of his 6-year-old son, to give statements on behalf of Lanez. Megan also issued a victim impact statement Monday, read by Deputy District Attorney Kathy Ta, stating she "will never be the same." Lanez's sentencing hearing was originally scheduled for January, but was rescheduled when he hired new attorneys and again after his legal team filed a motion for a new trial. A former Atlanta police officer was sentenced to five years in prison Monday for beating a Walmart customer he wrongfully accused of stealing a tomato and trying to cover it up, Channel 2 Action News reported.
 
Trevor King, 49, of Stockbridge, was convicted in December on federal charges of unreasonable force and falsifying a police report. 
 
According to prosecutors, King was in uniform and working off-duty at the Walmart on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive when he saw Tyrone Carnegay weigh a tomato and walk toward the storeâ€™s exit.
 
King stopped the victim near the door and hit the victim with his baton seven times, breaking two bones in the victimâ€™s right leg. 
 
As Carnegay lay on the floor bleeding from his injuries, prosecutors said King searched him and found a receipt for the tomato in Carnegayâ€™s bag.

People convicted of felonies in Texas, reports the Dallas Morning News, cannot vote even if they're on supervised release.
 
Mason, from Rendon outside Fort Worth, claims she was never told she couldn't vote until she finished her sentence, reports the Star-Telegram. The polling place where she voted did not find her name on the voter roll, so she was granted a provisional ballot. She was told to sign an affidavit, which stated, among other requirements, that an eligible voter not be a felon or they must have served their full sentence, according to the Morning News.
