On 25 July 1946, the United States conducted the first-ever underwater nuclear explosion. Test Baker, detonated at the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean, was the fifth of over 2,000 nuclear explosions conducted to date. Of these, only a few were underwater explosions, carried out mainly to assess the damage to ships and submarines. The majority of the tests - around three quarters - were conducted underground and the rest in the atmosphere, apart from a handful of nuclear tests in outer space, such as the 1962 Starfish Prime test.
 
The Baker device was suspended under a ship around 30 metres below the sea surface and yielded 23 kilotons. The test followed the atmospheric Test Able on 1 July 1946, both using the same design as the Nagasaki bomb. The objective was the same: to assess the effects of a nuclear explosion on a fleet of ships and on animals. Both tests were part of the 'Operation Crossroads' that involved some 42,000 personnel, 242 ships, 156 airplanes and the relocation of all 162 residents from the Bikini Atoll.
 
All of the pigs and most of the rats on the ships died either from the blast or from radiation exposure. Of the 57 target vessels, eight either sunk or capsized as a direct result of the explosion. Eight more suffered extensive damage. Most of the remaining ships were highly radioactive and remained so despite decontamination efforts, which consisted of scrubbing or spraying the decks. Their main result was to expose those involved to radioactivity, of which test Baker had produced considerably more than Able. " Amid the search for a missing Hawaii woman last seen in Los Angeles, the woman's father was found dead Sunday near LAX, police say.

Ryan Kobayashi had recently traveled to Los Angeles to help in the search for his daughter, Hannah Kobayashi. The 30-year-old woman went missing apparently sometime after a stopover at Los Angeles International Airport as she was traveling from Hawaii to New York City on Nov. 8.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's office confirms the death of Ryan Kobayashi, age 58, on Sunday, saying he was found in a parking lot. The coroner's information does not provide details on the cause of death. The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed to ABC News that Ryan Kobayashi's body was found Sunday around 4 a.m. at 6151 W. Century Blvd., a business near LAX. LAPD also did not provide a suspected cause of death.



Eyewitness News is working to contact the family. A nonprofit organization believed to be working with the Kobayashi family in the search issued a statement Sunday which conveyed the family's belief that he took his own life. The statement read in part:

"The Kobayashi family endured a devastating tragedy today. After tirelessly searching throughout Los Angeles for 13 days, Hannah's father, Ryan Kobayashi, tragically took his own life. This loss has compounded the family's suffering immeasurably.

What the family needs most in this difficult time is for all communities to rally around them with support, compassion, and prayers. Please be considerate with your comments and posts. The trauma they are enduring is profound, and they now face the additional burden of grieving the loss of their family's pillar and navigating next steps."

They asked for privacy so the family members could grieve and urged the public to maintain focus on the search for Hannah in the face of the tragic news about her father.

According to ABC News, A senior U.S. Navy official confirmed to ABC News that an underwater acoustic detection system heard on Sunday what was likely the implosion of the Titan submersible. The information was immediately shared with the U.S. Coast Guard on Sunday and analysis continued afterwards. 
 
"The U.S. Navy conducted an analysis of acoustic data and detected an anomaly consistent with an implosion or explosion in the general vicinity of where the Titan submersible was operating when communications were lost," the senior official told ABC News in a statement.
