More than a decade after its release, “Through the Wire” remains one of the most important songs of Kanye West’s career. Recorded after a car crash that left West with his jaw wired shut, the song is based around a sample of Chaka Khan’s 1984 track “Through the Fire,” which the rapper was inspired to use after hearing it while he was in the hospital.
