 South African riot police opened fire on striking miners armed with machetes and sticks at Lonmin's Marikana platinum mine, killing at least a dozen men in the deadliest episode of a week of union violence.

Heavily armed officers backed by armored vehicles were laying out barbed wire barricades when they were outflanked by some of the estimated 3,000 miners massed on a rocky outcrop near the mine.

Police opened fire with automatic weapons on a group of men who burst out from behind a vehicle. The volley of bullets threw up clouds of dust, which cleared to reveal at least seven bodies lying on the ground.

It was not clear whether the police were fired upon. They appeared to be on edge and with rifles pointing forwards immediately before the incident. Reuters photographs showed spears and clubs lying near the bodies.

The SAPA domestic news agency said one of its reporters had counted 18 bodies near a squatter camp close to the mine, Lonmin's flagship platinum plant, which was forced to shut down on Tuesday because of the union unrest.

There has been no confirmation the death toll.

Video shows a suspect being hit while trying to run from officers. Tuesday, police spotted a car that fled from officers the previous day and tried to stop the vehicle. The car sped away again and the chase was all captured on police dash cameras. The driver jumped from the car and ran along Gettysburg Avenue. Police said the suspect, Brandom Lamar Mann, ran in front of the police cruiser, at which point he was hit. Mann was taken to the hospital after the collision, before being booked into Montgomery County Jail on failure to comply, resisting arrest and obstruction of official business charges. SAN JOSE, Calif. â€” A group of protesters attacked Donald Trump supporters who were leaving the candidate's rally in San Jose on Thursday night. A dozen or more people were punched, at least one person was pelted with an egg and Trump hats grabbed from supporters were set on fire on the ground.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or arrests, but police had declared the gathering an unlawful assembly about a half-hour after the rally ended.

The crowd, which had numbered over 300 just after the rally, had thinned significantly but those that remained, filling about a city block near the San Jose Convention Center, were rowdy and angry.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — The man killed in an officer-involved shooting in the Richmond Highway corridor Thursday had attacked another officer in his police cruiser and may have grabbed the second officer's firearm, Fairfax County's police chief said at a news conference.

Footage of the struggle between the man and an officer at a Citgo gas station, 6241 Richmond Highway, has been circulating on social media and among media outlets.
