The city council in Greensboro, North Carolina, fired a volunteer who worked as the city's zoning commissioner after he repeatedly refused a Black woman's calls to address her by her professional title during a zoom meeting.
 
The council in a unanimous vote on Tuesday decided to remove Tony Collins, a construction contractor, from the zoning commission after he during a virtual meeting refused to address Carrie Rosario, a UNC-Greensboro professor with a doctorate in public health, as "Dr. Rosario," The Greensboro News & Record reported.
 
According to the report, during an April 19 meeting, Collins, who is white, entered a tense exchange with Rosario over the way he addressed her during the virtual meeting. 
 
According to the report, the interaction occurred toward the end of the meeting when Rosario raised concerns about a proposed development project near her home. Collins told her that the discussion was off-topic and referred to her as "Mrs. Rosario." 
 
"It's Dr. Rosario, thank you, sir," Rosario said.
 
"If Mrs. Rosario has something," Collins responded.
 
"Dr. Rosario," she repeated.
 
"Well, you know, I'm sorry," Collins said. "Your name says on here 'Carrie Rosario.' Hey Carrie."
 
"It's Dr. Rosario," Rosario repeated. "I wouldn't call you Tony, so please, sir, call me as I would like to be called."
 
Collins dismissed Rosario, and said it "didn't matter." 
 
"It matters to me," she said. "And out of respect, I would like you to call me by the name that I'm asking you to call me by."

But Collins continued to push back.

Rosario told McClatchy News that she had previously corrected another council member during the call, who apologized and corrected himself. She said she viewed Collins' repeated refusal to call by her title "a personal attack of disrespect."

"Officials with the Elyria Police Department said 28-year-old Keyron J. Ficklin was found was a stabbed to death in in house on Church Lane.

According to police, 30-year-old Bonita Tracy Ann Wright was arrested and charged with murder on Wednesday.

“We hung out a bit, one thing I will say about him is that he was a very good guy, and he did take care of his responsibility,” one neighbor said.

The man described his neighbor of two years as peaceful.

He also claims the victim and suspect were a couple.

“They were engaged, I did know Bonita also” neighbor said.

According to Elyria Municipal Court records, Wright was set a bond at $250,000" - 9 News | 

"It took a Lorain County Common Pleas jury less than three hours of deliberation Thursday to reach guilty verdicts on murder and other charges against Bonita Wright in the stabbing death of her boyfriend Keyron Ficklin in 2022.

Seven women and five men deliberated eight charges against Wright, 31, finding her guilty of two counts of murder, three counts of felonious assault and two counts of tampering with evidence in the Aug. 31, 2022, killing of Ficklin, 28, during a fight at Wright's residence on Church Lane in the Riverside Homes housing complex.

"Collins, 41, and his wife were leaving Babe’s Corner Store on Sumner Avenue when Robert May, 70, approached them on his bicycle. May, who also went by “Frog,” had repeatedly harassed Collins and his children, addressing them with racial slurs for months, said defense attorney Terrence Turnback.

On that afternoon, May rode directly into Collin’s wife after they exited the store, assaulting her with his bike, Collins told Superior Court Judge Guy P. Ryan during his plea.

May then turned to Collins and called him n*****, which drew a single punch to his face that brought him immediately to the ground. May’s fall and the punch knocked him unconscious, and he was later found by first responders lying on the cement, with blood coming from his mouth and head.

After May eventually came to, he was treated at the scene but refused additional medical assistance and went home, per a press release issued by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.

The police then received a tip that he was “acting erratically” after the fall, and he was transported to the hospital and eventually succumbed to his injuries on October 1. An autopsy determined the cause of death to be blunt-force trauma, and the manner of death was homicide.

Witnessed identified Collins to the police, and an arrest warrant was issued on October 4.
