Two men, Cedric Maurice Wooten Jr. (22) and Reco Daquon McCants (25), were denied bond after being charged with murder in the death of Tykendrick Barnett in the Africatown community. The shooting took place in the 2400 block of Wiley Street last week. Mobile County District Attorney Keith Blackwood confirmed that the victim and the defendants knew each other but declined to speculate on a possible motive, citing an ongoing investigation involving multiple agencies.

The judge ruled that both suspects were ineligible for bond due to their criminal histories. Wooten was already out on bond for a felony attempt to elude, while McCants has a probation hold from New York. McCants previously faced drug trafficking charges, but the case was dismissed in 2023 after a police officer failed to provide a search warrant and affidavit and did not show up in court despite a subpoena.

District Attorney Blackwood expressed frustration over the legal system’s inability to hold McCants accountable earlier. He noted that while double jeopardy does not apply before a trial has begun, reviving the previous case would be unlikely. Blackwood emphasized the challenges of seeing someone with a history of violent crime and dismissed charges now facing a murder charge, calling the situation deeply frustrating.

The case remains under investigation as authorities work to uncover further details. Both Wooten and McCants are scheduled to appear in court for arraignment on Wednesday. Meanwhile, prosecutors continue to piece together evidence to determine what led to the fatal shooting and whether additional charges may be filed. |
