In February 2024, 22-year-old nursing student Laken Riley was tragically murdered while jogging on the University of Georgia campus in Athens. Her attacker, 26-year-old José Antonio Ibarra, an undocumented immigrant from Venezuela, assaulted her during an attempted sexual assault. When Riley resisted, Ibarra brutally struck her multiple times with a rock, leading to her death from blunt force trauma and asphyxiation.


Ibarra was apprehended shortly after the incident. In November 2024, he was found guilty on multiple charges, including malice murder, felony murder, and kidnapping. He received a sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
