Smith's super featherweight fight with Francisco Vargas was stopped in the ninth round when the referee spotted the damage to his left ear. After already damaging the ear earlier in the fight, a Vargas right hand again connected with Smith's ear, tearing it right down the middle. The fight was called off on doctor's advice and Vargas was handed a TKO win, though the Mexican was well up on the scorecards.
