North Texas postal worker Eugene Gates Jr., 66, died on June 20 after he collapsed while delivering mail amid a dangerously high heat index, according to multiple reports â€” and now United States Postal Service (USPS) shifts in Texas will be starting earlier.

Postal workers said a flyer and alerts informed them their shifts would be moved to start at 7:30 in the morning, Fox 4 reported on Tuesday afternoon.

The heat index the day the worker died reached 115 degrees Fahrenheit, the highest recorded temperature in the Dallas-Fort Worth area since 1980, according to a local news outlet.

A homeowner rushed outside to perform CPR after Gates lost consciousness, but he was later pronounced dead at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital. The cause of death has yet to be determined by the medical examiner.

Gates served in the United States Army. He later traded his uniform for another life of service for the USPS, as noted in a statement

He was a member of Lone Star Branch 132 in the National Association of Letter Carriers. During his 36 years of delivering mail, Gates was "beloved by his colleagues and customers," the statement added.

"Americaâ€™s letter carriers often work in dangerous environments," National Association of Letter Carriers President Brian L. Renfroe, based in Washington, D.C., said in a recent statement.

"The most important and immediate step that can be taken to protect anyone from the hazard of excessive heat is to learn as much as possible about this potentially life-threatening hazard â€” particularly the warning signs of heat illness," he continued.

Some organizations, such as the World Health Organization, claim that climate change is causing steadily rising temperatures and increasing exposure to heat.

A man wearing an unusual mask who was sought in connection with more than 30 burglaries was arrested following a traffic stop in Beverly Hills.
 
The 30-year-old Inglewood man was pulled over Sunday by officers who found items, including a distinctive mask, in the car that linked him to the robberies, police said. He is suspected in at least two burglaries in Beverly Hills.
 
The man was free on bond Friday morning.

" A Middle Township Elementary School teacher in South Jersey is facing charges after she allegedly had a child with a student she's accused of sexually assaulting inside her home several years ago.
Laura Caron, 34, of Cape May Court House, was arrested on Wednesday on charges of aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, and endangering the welfare of a child.
The alleged crimes happened between 2016 and 2020 at the suspect's home in Cape May Court House. Authorities say the victim was 13 years old and living with then-28-year-old Caron when their child was born in 2019. Laura Caron, 34, of Cape May Court House, was arrested on Wednesday on charges of aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, and endangering the welfare of a child.
The case was brought to light when the victim's father made a social media post in December 2024 saying Caron's 5-year-old child looked very similar to him and his son, according to investigators.
Authorities say Caron taught the victim and his brother in the 5th grade.
Over the years, the parents of the victim said the family became friends with Caron, which ultimately led to them even allowing their boys and daughter to stay at Caron's home at times. The visits began one to two nights a week, but the children stayed with Caron permanently from 2016 to 2020, authorities revealed in court documents.
During her first appearance hearing, the judge identified Caron as a "resource family parent" for the children.
The victim's sister, who stayed at Caron's home at one point, allegedly told police she thought her brother was about 11 years old when he started sleeping with his teacher in the same bed. According to the criminal complaint, the sister revealed the children would sleep in a shared room on the second floor, but noticed her brother would be in Caron's bed the next morning.
