Chalino passed away on May 16, 1992, at the young age of 32.

In his last live performance which was being recorded by the cameras, he was handed a note by a fan which is believed to be a death threat. The musician who donned his signature big white hat with a beige suit opened it up in the middle of his performance while his band was still playing. He takes a moment to gather his thoughts and then nods at someone on the side of the stage before continuing to sing like nothing had happened.
